Athanasia Kaniatsou is an amateur photographer and a member of the Larissa Photography Club. She has been twice to Tanzania and Uganda as part of a missionary support group called "Πορεία Αγάπης" (love route/mission).
I was asked to help her materialize an exhibition based on the photographs she captured being in Africa. She liked a lot the 4x6in size. I found it cute, appropriate and difficult too.
Big prints (sometimes huge) is the trend of nowadays photography exhibitions, but it didn't matter to me. I thought of 4x6in prints as an intimate presentation of Athanasias' journey memories. This exhibition does not intend to represent fine art photography or social interest photo-reportage, it 's all about Athanasia's memories, so simple, so true.
After the photo editing and post-processing (samples here [2]) I dealt with the presentation. I had an idea like that http://www.cameraclubny.org/curatorial_call_2011.html [3] but the LPC building is old and in no way like the above. So I kept it more conservative, 3 18x8in, 4 5x7in and 43 4x6in photographs.
[4] I placed the 4x6 in groups based on subject and color. It was a difficult task to organize the photographs in such a way (in contrast to a simply serial presentation). If only I had a ladder to change the spotlights...
Special thanks to Vivi Tsioga [5], who helped a lot into creating these little groups.
The exhibition was successful and followed by positive feedback.
Thanks also to Eleni Mouzakiti and Fotini Papaxatzi for their influential portfolio review a few weeks ago.
