Earthquake and tsunami in Japan - Red Cross
A massive 9.0-magnitude earthquake struck the eastern coast of Japan at 14:46 local time on Friday 11 March.
Within minutes, the quake triggered a destructive tsunami that hit the eastern coast of Japan with 7-metre-high waves.
The Japanese Red Cross mobilized immediately its staff and volunteers to response the disaster. Priorities at the moment are search and rescue of the survivors and providing first aid and medical care, food, water and shelter to the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami.
To respond to the needs of those concerned about relatives in the affected regions, the Japanese Red Cross Society, is encouraging those living overseas to make use of the ICRC’s restoring family links web page: www.icrc.org/familylinks.
