Batchrun – the easy way to do your batch jobs

27 Jul 2010

Batchrun is a graphical script creation tool that eliminates the need for knowledge of arcane scripting languages to execute batches of commands. With Batchrun .brs batch files you can launch any number of programs or dialup connections with just a simple click. You can control the starting process with many properties like priority or run mode and control their behavior a tad.

Case study, Nokia PC Suite

Difficulty: simple and easy

I have a Nokia smartphone and I use Nokia PC Suite only for synchronization with Outlook. It’s a nice thing that Nokia made such a bloated software like that. Inexperienced and new users may find it helpful. It’s a bad thing though that Nokia does not provide a simple sync software or just an outlook/thunderbird/evolution/… plugin. I, and I suspect many more, don’t want useless software running all the time in the background. A good cross-platform sync applet and a modem driver would be perfect. But… there is no such a thing. (You may suggest Ovi Suite as an alternative, but I find it to be more bloated and a system resources hog)

So, the First action to take is to disable Nokia PC Suite from auto starting. It’s easy. It’s on the menu (File>Invoke at startup). Now where are going to use Batchrun to a. start only the Nokia Sync application b. stop all Nokia services when we exit the Nokia Sync.

Second action. I am paranoid. I also want the Bluetooth service running only when I want to.
Win Key + R > services.msc > configure Bluetooth support service to stat manually

Third action. Create a folder anywhere you like, e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Bacthrun\Nokia (in x86 Windows system it’s just “Program Files”).
Create net start bthserv.bat file containing
net start bthserv
Create net stop bthserv.bat file containing
net stop bthserv
net stop servicelayer

Fourth action. Fire up Batchrun.
Command Run
Priority Normal
Run Mode Normal
Filename C:\Program Files (x86)\Bacthrun\Nokia\net start bthserv.bat
Add +
Filename C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Nokia PC Suite 7\PcSync2.exe
Add +

File save as Nokia Sync Start.brs at the  C:\Program Files (x86)\Bacthrun\Nokia folder.

Attention. Windows 7 auto starts Bluetooth support service when you plug the Bluetooth dongle (if you have a notebook, when you press to Bluetooth button). Vista does not. Therefore, Windows 7 – uncheck the fist line (C:\Program Files (x86)\Bacthrun\Nokia\net start bthserv.bat), Windows Vista/XP – leave it.

Create a new Batchrun file.
Command Run
Priority Normal
Run Mode Normal
Filename C:\Program Files (x86)\Bacthrun\Nokia\net stop bthserv.bat
Add +
Filename taskkill /F /IM MPAPI3s.exe
Add +
Filename taskkill /F /IM conime.exe
Add +

File save as Nokia Sync Stop.brs at the  C:\Program Files (x86)\Bacthrun\Nokia folder.

Fifth action. Create shortcuts of the two brs files, change their icons to whatever you want, and place them to your start menu or desktop or...

Now you a. plug the Bluetooth dongle b. click Nokia start c. sync d. exit sync e. click Nokia stop

Conclusion

Possibilities are many. Batchrun can give power users and system administrators an additional tool to common batch files/operations.
